What is on the list

Thirty-six: fallen leaves, acorn, scarecrow, hayride, cider, conkers, a rake, an orchard, morning mist, the first frost, geese, short days. Some of it is British and some American, conkers and hayride sit on the same list, which is deliberate, because the search that brings people here says fall and the people printing it often say autumn.

Playing it outdoors

This one works as a walking game rather than a called one: the players carry a card and cross things off as they find them. That changes what you want from a card. Fewer squares finishes sooner, three by three gives eight to find rather than 24, and one to a sheet gives a card big enough to write on with cold hands.

The caller’s sheet at the back is still worth printing as the answer list, so there is something to check a claim against.
